Hurling and Camogie in St. Joseph’s takes place in all year groups and all competitions organised by Ulster Colleges GAA are entered. In recent years there has been increased participation in both sports across all age groups, and this has resulted in some success in various competitions.
Local clubs feeding into school teams include Eoghan Ruadh, Dungannon and Eire Óg, Carrickmore.
2014 was a very successful year for the school. In June the year 8 and 9 hurling team won the Tyrone Year 9 Hurling Blitz in Garvaghy beating the Academy in the final.
Some of these boys, now in year 9, now have two medals in their collection as they captured the Ulster Year 9 Rehill Cup in October. This was a great achievement for the boys as many of them were playing hurling for the first time.
The year 10 and 12 teams are training hard hoping to emulate the success of the younger members of the hurling team.
The U16 team this year were very unfortunate in their competition, coming up against schools who are fortunate to have bigger numbers to pick from. The girls played well and things look promising for this team next year.
The under 14 team are training hard for their upcoming competition in March. The experience many of them gained from playing with the under 16’s will hopefully help them.
